The Heuga Center for Multiple Sclerosis earns coveted rating for fiscal responsibility

Edwards, Colo. • Nov. 27, 2007 – The Heuga Center for Multiple Sclerosis earned four stars, the highest rating possible, from nonprofit evaluator Charity Navigator this month for its ability to efficiently manage and grow its finances. Charity Navigator is the nation’s largest and most-utilized, independent evaluator of nonprofit organizations.

“We are extremely proud to be awarded Charity Navigator’s highest rating,” said Brian Hutchinson, CEO and president of The Heuga Center. “Our donors can be confident that their dollars are used efficiently to help people and families living with MS. Charity Navigator’s recognition of our accomplishments proves that we are worthy of our donors’ trust.”

Charity Navigator’s rating system is based on multiple components including service delivery, organizational and financial health. Charity Navigator’s evaluations are based on the nonprofit organization’s annual tax return. Each year Charity Navigator’s team of professional analysts examines tens of thousands of nonprofit financial documents to help donors give wisely. Donors rely on the star-rating system to guide their dollars to the most responsible charities.

“Less than a quarter of the charities we evaluate have received our highest rating, indicating that The Heuga Center outperforms the majority of nonprofits in America with respect to fiscal responsibility,” said Trent Stamp, president of Charity Navigator. “We evaluate ten times more charities than our nearest competitor and currently more visitors to our Web site than all other charity-rating groups combined, thus making us the leading charity evaluator in America.”

Charity Navigator’s staff, based in New Jersey, consists of people from a variety of professional disciplines who united in the belief that the philanthropic marketplace will benefit from a new level of unbiased financial analysis. Charity Navigator’s analysts are drawn not only from the fields of education and nonprofit management, but also from positions of skill within the for-profit sector.

The Heuga Center’s rating can be viewed at www.charitynavigator.org.

The Heuga Center Story

Former Olympic ski racer, Jimmie Heuga, founded The Heuga Center in 1984 to teach people with multiple sclerosis (MS) how to use exercise to help manage their life with this chronic disease. He wanted to share the principles that transformed his life from one of despair to one of health and well-being.

Heuga was diagnosed with MS in 1970, at the height of his racing career. At the time, people with MS were advised to avoid physical activity. Defying conventional wisdom, Heuga began a program of exercise, nutrition, and psychological motivation and found not only physical condition, but his outlook on life improved.

Jimmie's success revolutionized the management of MS. He transformed his frustration into productivity, reclaiming his life and showing the medical community that there was, indeed, another way to live with MS.

Today, The Heuga Center has expanded Jimmie's approach to focus on the whole person and family living with the impacts of MS. Programs include education, nutrition, mental well-being, and exercise, as well as learning specific, individualized life management skills and wasy to integrate wellness activities into everyday life. The Center's Programs help people set personal life goals as a focal point for reclaiming their lives, and then give them the strategies, confidence and support to strive for those goals.

The Heuga Center's unique programs are recognized worldwide as a valuable complement to regular medical treatment. The Center is a member of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers and works closely with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the American Academy of Neurology.

As a leader in the field of MS, The Heuga Center has brought health and hope to thousands of people and families living with MS. It remains the only resource of its kind in the world.

Heuga Center MS Programs

The Heuga Center’s five-day CAN DO Program brings together 45 MS specialists in diverse fields, from neurologists and psychologists, to nutritionists and physical therapists to address the needs, concerns, and goals of 25 participants and their support partners. Workshops, lectures, fitness assessments, one-on-one consultations, and an entire support partner program make the CAN DO Programs unique in the world.

In addition, the Center offers three-day CAN DO 2 and one-day JUMPSTART programs as well as continuing education professional seminars and Internet-based education and teleconferences. The program staff consists of national and international experts in MS management including physicians and allied health and mental health professionals. The programs concentrate on participant’s needs and concerns related to the uncertainty of a chronic disease such as MS. This is done through identifying specific goals of each individual and providing a roadmap for achievement of those goals.

Another important aspect is the inclusion of support partners (spouses, family members and friends) as part of all programs, recognizing the unique needs of these individuals as it relates to managing a chronic disease. Approaching overall health and MS management as a “team” provides greater strength and support than ‘going it alone’. The Heuga Center emphasizes the importance of addressing each individual’s needs and goals in its lifestyle management programs.
